The Mini Heli-Safe is a scaled-down, more compact version of the original, retaining all the features that made it so popular… and offering a few additional advantages.
It still works in precisely the same way as the original, which caused a revolution at the time. It gave anglers the ability to use any helicopter-style setup with the option of dropping the lead when a fish was hooked. This provided a huge advantage in situations with weed or snags, as well as when using systems like the “chod rig”.
The Heli-Safe gave anglers the ability to fish in this manner quickly and effectively – simply by attaching the lead to the system, and it did the rest, releasing the lead when the swivel eye pulled against the top bead. Technology has advanced, and we have managed to make this system much smaller – this not only makes it less noticeable on the lakebed but also reduces air resistance and improves casting distance for long casts. Additionally, a smaller size means a lower chance of snagging in weed or obstacles after a fish is hooked, when the lead has already been dropped.
Aside from the compact size, the biggest difference from the original is that it can now be set up in three different ways. Included is a standard spring – the same as in the original model – which allows the lead to be released as soon as slight pressure is applied to the top of the Heli-Safe. Also included is a red spring, which requires significantly more pressure to drop the lead – ideal if you only want to do so on rare occasions and the lake is relatively clear of weed and snags. Furthermore, a locking ring is also included, just like for the original, which completely prevents the lead from dropping.
The Mini Heli-Safe comes supplied with a size 11 QC Swivel and can be used naked or with leadcore. Despite its smaller size, it is very robust and easily withstands the stress generated by any of our leads, even during long casts.
